TIFF’s Canadian Lineup: Deepa Mehta, Lesbian Romance, Poetic Animation, and More

“Anatomy of Violence”: TIFF

TIFF 2016 will host the World Premiere of Deepa Mehta’s newest film. The fest has announced its Canadian lineup, of which the former Oscar nominee is a part.

Screening in the Masters program, Mehta’s “Anatomy of Violence” offers a fictional dramatization of the infamous 2012 Dehli gang rape that made headlines around the world: six men assaulted a young woman on a moving bus, and as TIFF summarizes, she “was beaten senseless and thrown naked out onto the street.” “Anatomy of Violence” will portray the lives of the rapists, presumably with the intention of offering insight into their monstrous actions.

Other Canadian titles include Ann Marie Fleming’s “Window Horses,” an animated film about a young Canadian poet on a journey of discovery, learning more about herself and the world around her. The film features the voices of Ellen Page and Sandra Oh, and “is filled with poems and histories created by a variety of artists and animators, who set out to blend a vast myriad of differences between cultures, philosophies, arts, and time frames.” April Mullen’s “Below Her Mouth,” which was filmed with an all-female crew, depicts a passionate affair between two women, a roofer and a fashion editor, and the havoc it wreaks on their lives. “We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice,” a new doc from Alanis Obomsawin, explores a historic discrimination complaint against Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada, who were accused of failing to provide adequate services to First Nations children on reserves in Canada.

TIFF writes, “The Canada Goose Award for Best Canadian Feature Film will be presented to one of many outstanding Canadian filmmakers, and the City of Toronto Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film will be presented to the filmmaker with the most impressive debut feature film at the Festival.”

The 41st edition of the festival runs from September 8–18 in Toronto. As previously announced, TIFF will host the World Premieres of Mira Nair’s chess underdog story “Queen of Katwe” and Amma Asante’s interracial romance “A United Kingdom.”
