Trailer Watch: A Throuple Makes Comic Book History in “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women”

“Professor Marston & the Wonder Women”

“I’m going to inject my ideas right into the thumping heart of America,” announces esteemed psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans, “Beauty and the Beast”) in a new trailer for Angela Robinson’s “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women.” He’s convinced that the best and most efficient way to disseminate his views is not through publishing articles in esoteric academic journals but by writing a comic book — one about an Amazon princess who lives on an island of all women, wears a burlesque outfit, and fights Nazis.

“Nobody — and I say this with all the compassion and truth in my heart — nobody will will ever publish this,” his wife and fellow researcher, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall, “Vicky Christina Barcelona”), is sorry to tell him. Happily for William — and “Wonder Woman” fans around the world — Elizabeth turns out to be wrong.

Inspired by true events, “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” tells the story of “Wonder Woman” creator William and the women who inspired the iconic character: Elizabeth and the married couple’s lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote, “The Man in the High Castle”). William, Elizabeth, and Olive aren’t just fighting to bring an unconventional heroine to the masses — they’re also fighting for their right to have an unconventional relationship despite intense social pressure and judgment.

“Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” follows on the heels of the release of Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” which has now grossed over $821 million worldwide, making the blockbuster the highest-grossing live-action film ever helmed by a woman.

Robinson most recently worked on the Shondaland series “How to Get Away with Murder” as a consulting producer. Her other credits include “True Blood,” “The L Word,” “Herbie Fully Loaded,” and “D.E.B.S.”

“Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month to strong reviews. The biopic opens in theaters this Friday, October 13.
