The arrival of “Arrival” is fast approaching, and in anticipation of the cerebral sci-fi thriller’s premiere, a heart-pounding final trailer has been released.
“Arrival” stars Amy Adams as Louise Banks, a linguistics expert who is recruited by the government to make first contact with the alien species after their pods enter the atmosphere. Louise must translate an extraterrestrial language and decode the aliens’ message and respond, but also get the leaders of the entire world to listen to, and believe, her translation. “As mankind teeters on the verge of global war,” the official synopsis continues, “Banks and the team race against time for answers — and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.”
This new trailer pumps up the action bits of the film, with Banks going head to head with the men in charge who quickly dismiss her suggestions about communication styles and her warnings about how impulsive moves could lead to war. What the narrative says about women and communication versus men and action will surely be a topic of discussion among audiences, critics, and cinema and gender studies scholars.
“Arrival” has played to great acclaim at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. It opens on November 11.
