Trailer Watch: BAFTA-Winning Comedy “Chewing Gum” Returns for Season 2

“Chewing Gum”

“Chewing Gum” fans are in for a treat: A trailer for the upcoming second season of the BAFTA-winning series has been released, and it offers a look at the misadventures that await the comedy’s unforgettable leading lady.

The hilarious British series centers on Tracey (Michaela Coel), a sexually inexperienced and anxious twenty-something born into a strict religious family. The first season of the show saw Tracey drop her controlling boyfriend and act on her sexual desires with her underachieving neighbor. Tracey’s antics didn’t sit well with her conservative mother, who kicked her out of the family house.

Coel is not only the star of the series, but its creator. She penned five episodes of Season 1, and also served as a composer on the show. The playwright won two BAFTA TV Awards for “Chewing Gum” last year: Best Female Performance in a Comedy Program and Breakthrough Talent.

The trailer suggests that Tracey is still harboring feelings for her neighbor and has invented an imaginary boyfriend — that drives a Rolex — to impress him, but she’s got an even bigger problem to deal with. Technically homeless, Tracey is squatting in the supermarket she works at. She’s also making a deal to shave a bum crack in exchange for a favor.

Check out Tracey’s intoxicating awkwardness — and her amazingly expressive face — in the trailer below. British viewers can catch the Season 2 premiere of “Chewing Gum” on E4 January 12. No word on when the second season will begin streaming on Netflix in the U.S., but you can watch Season 1 on the streaming giant now.
