Trailer Watch: Charlotte Rampling Enters the Best Actress Race in Marital Drama ’45 Years’

On the cusp of her 45-year wedding anniversary, Kate (Charlotte Rampling) begins to question her relationship with her husband Geoff (Tom Courtenay) when another woman enters their marriage. When the body of Geoff’s girlfriend before Kate is exhumed — Katya died in an accident long ago — Kate finds that her half-century-long partnership with Geoff can’t compete with his memories of — and longing for — his young, tragic love.

Rampling and Courtenay won the Best Actress and Best Actor Silver Bears at the 2015 Berlinale, and Rampling is considered a dark horse in this year’s awards season, especially with a powerfully subtle performance and a career-long fondness for the screen legend on her side. The trailer suggests Kate’s anguish and determination to banish Katya from her marriage — only to find her becoming obsessed with the dead woman herself.

“45 Years” opens December 23.
