Trailer Watch: Dakota Fanning is a Rebellious Victorian Teen Bride in ‘Effie Gray’

The annulment of the marriage between prominent art critic John Ruskin and his much younger wife Effie Gray was a scandal in Victorian England, not least because Gray contended that their five-year marriage had never been consummated. Not surprisingly, the outgoing socialite began an affair with one of her husband’s proteges, the pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, whom she eventually married and had eight children with.

Gray’s life has been adapted in plays, films, even an opera, and now it finds another treatment in the film Effie Gray, written by Emma Thompson (who also co-stars). Dakota Fanning plays Effie, the 19-year-old bride kept under lock and key in her new home, until she decides to explore her sexuality, with or without her husband.

Julie Walters, Claudia Cardinale, Robbie Coltraine, and Tom Sturridge co-star.

A UK release is set for October 10 and there is as of now there is no US release date.
