Trailer Watch: Final “Wonder Woman” Spot Follows the Rise of the Warrior

“Wonder Woman”

“Be careful of mankind, Diana,” Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) tells her daughter, a pint-sized Diana, Princess of Themyscira aka Wonder Woman. “They do not deserve you.”

If the final official trailer for Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” is any indication, Hippolyta is right: the world doesn’t deserve Diana — but it sure as hell needs her. The clip sees Diana (Gal Godot) springing to action after learning about Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya, “The Skin I Live In”), a villain whose power threatens everlasting war. So Diana takes a sword, shield, and the Lasso of Truth and leaves her matriarchal homeland to fight alongside Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

“If you choose to leave, you may never return,” Hippolyta warns her daughter. “Who will I be if I stay?” Diana responds. Thus, the Princess of Themyscira becomes Diana Prince.

This “Rise of the Warrior” trailer arrived only a few days after The Mary Sue reported on Warner Bros.’ partnership with Think Thin for “Wonder Woman”-edition diet bars. Wonder Woman is a famous symbol of women’s liberation and empowerment, and Jenkins’ film took forever to get off the ground. It’s unfortunate that this boundary-busting movie is now associated with our culture’s obsession with thin (but not too thin) and fit (but not too fit) women’s bodies. At least the “Wonder Woman” action figures accentuate the superheroine’s power and strength instead of her goal weight.

“Wonder Woman” opens June 2.
