Trailer Watch: Gemma Arterton Leaves Her Family Behind in “The Escape”

“The Escape”

Gemma Arterton plays a stay-at-home mom pushed to the brink in “The Escape.” When Tara finds herself dealing with depression, she’s told it’s just “a phase” and her self-absorbed husband (Dominic Cooper) wants his “happy girl” back. But the numbing routine of housework and overwhelming responsibilities of child care have left her desperate for a change. Convinced that she can no longer tolerate her old life, she decides to start anew.

A trailer for the drama shows Tara buying a one-way ticket to Paris — and she’s traveling solo. She leaves her kids and husband behind in the hopes of finding herself. But a fresh start isn’t so easy when she has left a whole other life — and her family — to do so.

“Sometimes we need more courage to stay than to leave,” she’s told.

Arterton’s recent films include “Their Finest,” “Orphan,” and “The Girl with All the Gifts.”

Written and directed by Dominic Savage (“Love + Hate”), “The Escape” hits VOD and theaters in New York and LA on May 11. A national theatrical rollout will follow.
