Trailer Watch: Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Perfect Love Story Gets Turned Upside Down in “Irreplaceable You”

“Irreplaceable You”

A newly engaged couple receive earth-shattering news in a new trailer for Stephanie Laing’s “Irreplaceable You.” Childhood sweethearts Abbie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Sam (Michiel Huisman) are under the impression that they’re about to become parents when a doctor’s visit reveals that Abbie’s growing stomach is in fact housing a tumor. “There’s this moment when everything changes,” she says. And that moment comes when Abbie and Sam are told that she has cancer.

Seemingly pessimistic about her chances of survival and convinced that Sam won’t be able to take care of himself in her absence, Abbie resolves to set him up. “I thought if I planned your whole future it wouldn’t hurt so much not to be a part of it,” she explains.

“Irreplaceable You” marks Laing’s feature directorial debut. She’s won Emmy Awards for producing “Veep” and “Tracey Takes On…” and has directed eps of the former.

Raw’s previous credits include the beloved “Black Mirror” episode “San Junipero,” “Beyond the Lights,” and “Belle.” She has a role in Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time,” set to bow March 9.

Written by actress Bess Wohl (“CSI: NY”), “Irreplaceable You” drops on Netflix February 16. The romance co-stars Christopher Walken, Kate McKinnon, Steve Coogan, and Jacki Weaver.
