Trailer Watch: Helen Mirren Builds a Haunted House in “Winchester”

“Winchester”

“I will do whatever it takes to protect my family,” says Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) in a new trailer for “Winchester.” She takes extraordinary — and extraordinarily odd — measures to keep them safe. Inspired by a true story, the gothic thriller sees the heiress to to the Winchester fortune building a seven-story house on an isolated stretch of land outside of San Francisco.

The property isn’t intended as a safe haven for her loved ones — it contains hundreds of rooms, and she plans to use them to imprison the ghosts she’s convinced mean harm to the Winchesters.

We’re told that Sarah’s “mind is as chaotic as the house itself” and there’s concerns about “her sanity,” but the creepy footage suggests that Sarah’s fears are warranted. She isn’t just imagining a malignant presence in the air — it’s actually there, and intends to do harm.

Check out the trailer to see Mirren looking like a gothic goddess and taking on her otherworldly enemies. The Oscar winner’s latest film, road trip adventure “The Leisure Seeker,” opens January 19.

“Winchester” hits theaters February 2.
