Trailer Watch: Isabelle Huppert Tries to Reclaim Her Singing Career in “Souvenir”

“Souvenir”

Isabelle Huppert has gone from a rising star to a factory worker in “Souvenir.” A trailer for the French-language drama has been released, and it suggests that a comeback may be in store for Liliane (Huppert) thanks to the enthusiasm and encouragement of her younger co-worker Jean (Kévin Azaïs, “Love at First Fight”). “What happened?” he asks Liliane, wondering how the former singer ended up making pasta in a factory.

Liliane finished second in the 1974 European Song Contest behind Abba, but in the years since, “everyone has forgotten her brush with fame,” the film’s official synopsis details. But when Jean falls in love with her, he convinces her to return to the stage. “I’ll take care of you. You’ll be a star again,” he promises. But the spot makes it clear that Liliane’s return to show business is not without complications, and her relationship with Jean seems to take a turn for the worse.

Huppert won a Golden Globe this year for her performance in controversial psychological thriller “Elle.” She also earned an Oscar nod for the role. Among her upcoming projects is another thriller, “The Widow.” The film centers on the friendship between Huppert’s character and a younger woman who recently lost her mother.

Directed by Bavo Defurne (“North Sea Texas”), “Souvenir” will open in the UK June 23. Strand Releasing will distribute the film in the U.S. but no word on a release date yet.
