Trailer Watch: Lauren Greenfield Explores a Shift in the American Dream in “Generation Wealth”

“Generation Wealth”

“I’ve been a photographer for 25 years. With my lens focused on wealth, I noticed that no matter how much people had they still want more,” says Lauren Greenfield in a trailer for “Generation Wealth.”

Best known for Sundance winner “The Queen of Versailles,” a 2012 documentary about a billionaire couple constructing a mansion modeled after Versailles, Miller’s new doc explores a “shift in the American dream” and why the nation’s “obsession with wealth has grown.”

The trailer introduces us to characters who own wear 33 pounds of gold and diamonds, collect Birkin bags, and make no apologies. “If I wanna work 100 hours a week and never see my family and die at an early age, that’s my prerogative,” says one woman. Another character admits he knows the names of the Kardashians better than the names of his neighbors.

“Spanning consumerism, beauty, gender, body commodification, aging, and more, Greenfield has created a comprehensive cautionary tale about a culture heading straight for the cliff’s edge,” the film’s official synopsis hints.

“The Queen of Versailles” received IDA and DGA noms. Greenfield made her feature debut with Emmy-nominated “Thin,” a doc about four women with anorexia.

“Generation Wealth” premiered at Sundance in January. The Amazon Studios title hits select theaters July 20.
