Trailer Watch: Learn the Story Behind Diana Prince in “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women”

“Professor Marston & The Wonder Women”

“Wonder Woman” has now grossed over $765 million worldwide, making the Patty Jenkins-directed blockbuster the highest-grossing live-action film ever helmed by a woman. For many, Diana Prince’s origin story served as an introduction to the Wonder Woman character. Others were already familiar with the beloved comic book heroine. But few know the controversial story behind her creation. Inspired by true events, Angela Robinson’s “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” tells the story of “Wonder Woman” creator Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans, “Beauty and the Beast”) and the women who inspired the iconic character: his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall, “Vicky Christina Barcelona”), and lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote, “Man in the High Castle”).

“I think you long for an unconventional life,” Olive tells Elizabeth in a newly released trailer for the drama. And it’s clear that all three of the film’s protagonists desire just that — but realize that defying the norm, be it professionally or personally, carries a heavy toll. We see Marston reprimanded by a colleague (Connie Britton, “Nashville”) who says that “Every issue of ‘Wonder Woman’ is filled with violence, torture, and sadomasochism.” And as for the romance between Marston, Olive, and Elizabeth, the latter seems to think “it can never happen” because “the world won’t let it.”

Robinson most recently worked on the Shondaland series “How to Get Away with Murder” as a consulting producer. Her other credits include “True Blood,” “The L Word,” “Herbie Fully Loaded,” and “D.E.B.S.”

Check out the trailer to hear Olive’s take on why “a woman must not be told how to use her freedom.”

“Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” opens October 27.
