Trailer Watch: Lily James Plays a Young Meryl Streep in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”

It’s time to head back to Kalokairi, and all the singing, dancing, and stunning scenery that made audiences fall in love with the Greek island in “Mamma Mia!” A trailer for the 2008 film’s sequel has dropped, and it sees Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) returning to the island she planned to get married on. This time around, she’s pregnant.

While Sophie originally sought to discover the identity of her father, the first film concluded with her getting three dads after it was mutually decided not to pursue a paternity test. Sadly, Sophie is returning to Kalokairi and preparing for motherhood without her own mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), by her side in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” Donna has died sometime between the events of the first film and this one.

“I’m pregnant but I don’t know how to do it by myself,” Sophie tells Donna’s former bandmates, Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters). They emphasize that Donna is “the bravest person” they ever met, and proceed to explain exactly why that’s the case.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” goes back and forth in time, and sees Tanya and Rosie dishing on Donna’s past — and Sophie’s dads. “Life is short. The world is wide. I want to make some memories,” a young Donna (Lily James) says. There’s no denying that she makes plenty of them.

The original “Mamma Mia!” film was adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name and grossed over $609 million worldwide. Phyllida Lloyd directed and Catherine Johnson penned the script.

Written and directed by Ol Parker (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”), “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” hits theaters July 20, 2018.
