Trailer Watch: Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon Are Hapless Agents in “The Spy Who Dumped Me”

“The Spy Who Dumped Me”

Car chases through beautiful cities are a staple of the spy movie genre — but what if your getaway vehicle, the one thing between you and the bad guys, isn’t an automatic? That’s the situation Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon) find themselves in in the new trailer for “The Spy Who Dumped Me.”

Trying to evade shooting motorcyclists, the duo sprint through the streets and steal a car. Or try to steal it, anyway. “It’s a stick — do you know how to drive a stick?” Audrey yells. “Do you know how to change a gear?” Morgan’s “What’s a gear?” isn’t helpful.

From “Life Partners” director Susanna Fogel, “The Spy Who Dumped Me” centers on the best friends as they — through no fault of their own — become tangled up in a spy plot. Turns out Audrey’s ex (Justin Theroux) is a CIA agent.

It’s hard to think of two people less suited for espionage than Audrey and Morgan. “I’ll tell you anything you want to know. I’ve never kept a secret in my life,” Morgan says when threatened with torture. “[Audrey] has sex dreams about minions!”

The friendship between the two women appears to be the heart of “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” which makes sense given Fogel’s interests as a director. “So many of my favorite stories, in any medium, are about friendship,” she told us in an interview. “We’ve enjoyed a handful of ‘bromances’ over the past 10 years, but there haven’t been many female equivalents that handle the specific way we relate to our friends honestly and comically.”

Fogel wrote “The Spy Who Dumped Me” with David Iserson (“United States of Tara”). The action comedy hits theaters August 3.
