Trailer Watch: Naomi Watts Can’t Control Her Impulses in “Gypsy”

“Gypsy”

“I used to believe that people determine their own lives. Yet there’s one force more powerful than free will — our desires,” says Naomi Watts in a new trailer for “Gypsy.” The two-time Oscar nominee plays a therapist who struggles to keep her personal and professional lives separate. Jean doesn’t just blur the boundaries of what’s appropriate behavior with her patients — she completely abuses the power and privilege that come along with her job. Her husband (Billy Crudup, “Jackie”) puts it more succinctly: “You need to control your fucking impulses,” he tells her.

The footage shows Jean manipulating her patients, lying to and cheating on her husband, and getting into all sorts of trouble. “We’re just here to listen. At the end of the night we go home to our lives and they live theirs,” a colleague tells her. But Jean clearly doesn’t relate to — or abide by — this philosophy.

“Gypsy” was created by Lisa Rubin. The first season of the drama features ten episodes, six of which were helmed by women. Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Nowhere Boy”), Victoria Mahoney (“Yelling to the Sky”), and Coky Giedroyc (“Harlots”) directed two episodes each.

Watts earned Oscar nods for “The Impossible” and “21 Grams.” Her recent credits include “3 Generations,” “Shut In,” and “Allegiant.”

“Gypsy” will premiere on Netflix June 30.
