Trailer Watch: Natalie Portman Is a Spiritualist Superstar in “Planetarium”

“Planetarium”

A gorgeous trailer has landed for “Planetarium,” Rebecca Zlotowski’s upcoming period drama starring Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp (“Yoga Hosers”) as sisters. The young American spiritualists make their way to Paris in the 1930s as part of their world tour, and cross paths with an influential French film producer who enlists them to appear in an unconventional film.

“Planetarium” will make its World Premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, taking place August 31-September 10, then make its North American debut at TIFF, which runs from September 8–18. The film doesn’t have a U.S. distributor yet (it will likely snag one at TIFF), so no word on when it’ll hit theaters here, but French audiences can catch it beginning November 16.

Check out the international trailer below, which shows the close-knit sisters struggling to adjust to life in the spotlight in pre-war Paris. It seems as though the sisters’ intense, seemingly dysfunctional bond with the producer takes a toll on their own relationship. “You’re jealous,” Depp tells Portman, who responds by slapping her younger sister across the face.

Parts of the trailer are in French and it doesn’t include English subtitles, but you don’t need to know French to understand the gist of a disturbing message left for Portman, and what it might signal for the sisters, and the country in which they are visitors.
