Trailer Watch: New ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Spot Deals With Fat Amy’s Wardrobe Malfunction

Gigs don’t get much more high-profile than performing for the President of the United States on his birthday. It’s possibly the single worst occasion to deal with a “commando situation” (unless, of course, you’re Marilyn Monroe).

The new trailer for “Pitch Perfect 2” begins by firmly (and graphically) reestablishing the Barden Bellas as (underpants-less) underdogs. While the all-girl acapella group came out victorious at the end of the first “Pitch Perfect,” it’s looking as though they will have to climb their way back to the top of the college singing scene after being suspended and replaced by European champions when Australian “Fat Amy” (Rebel Wilson) gives the president a birthday gift “from down under.”

Winning the world championships is the only way their title will be reinstated, but compared to their polished and poised German competitors, the ladies are looking like a “heated mess — a mess where heat is applied to it so what once was a little messy is even messier.” Competitive spirit isn’t what binds the group together and inspires them to carry on. Instead, they are united and propelled by their love for each other. “When I look back on this, I won’t remember performing and competing. I’m gonna remember you weirdos,” admits an uncharacteristically sentimental Beca (Anna Kendrick).

Cue the Bellas singing a rousing and empowering rendition of Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls).” “These girls have broken down every single barrier in their path,” explains an aca-color commentator, and we can’t help but feel like he’s talking about the movie itself. “Pitch Perfect 2” is one of the few major releases this year to be directed by a woman (Elizabeth Banks in her feature directorial debut), written by a woman (Kay Cannon, who has written for “New Girl” and “30 Rock” and scribed the original “Pitch Perfect”), and is about women.

The first “Pitch Perfect” grossed over $65 million domestically, and we are expecting the second installment to produce similarly great numbers when it’s released May 15. Watch the trailer for footage of pillow fights, campfire bonding, and singing galore.
