Trailer Watch: Nicole Byer Finds Her Voice as a Comedian in “Loosely Exactly Nicole”

“Loosely Exactly Nicole”

A hilarious trailer has been released for “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” a new MTV comedy starring actress and comedian Nicole Byer (“Girl Code”). The clip kicks off with Byer, who is playing a version of herself, auditioning for a role. A shameless casting director tells her, “That was good. I’m just going to say it: I want it blacker.” Welcome to Hollywood, a business where the few roles offered to people of color are usually racist caricatures! The scene gets even worse/better when the agent requests that Byers read the script as “Church-Lady Black and Oprah Black.” This is cringe-inducing comedy at its best.

The official synopsis for the half-hour show reads, “Nicole (Byer) is living the Hollywood dream. Well, Hollywood adjacent — the deep valley to be precise and it’s not so much a dream but a struggle… We’ll watch as Nicole, exuding her special brand of confidence and irreverence, demonstrates the hilarious missteps of what it means to be out on your own for the first time. She’ll deal with humiliating auditions, unpaid electric bills, friendship ups and downs, and the battlefield that is Tinder as she slowly but surely finds her voice as a comedian.”

Byer’s costars include Kimrie Lewis-Davis (“Scandal”) and Sophie von Haselberg (“Equity”). Christine Zander (“Mom,” “Nurse Jackie”) serves as showrunner and EP.

“I think when people get to see someone who looks like them, I think that inspires people to do what they want to do,” Byer has said.

“Loosely Exactly Nicole” premieres September 5 on MTV. Check out the trailer below, and learn about the scent of McDonald’s as an aphrodisiac.
