Trailer Watch: The Hunters Become the Hunted in Coralie Fargeat’s “Revenge”

“Revenge”

Described by writer-director Coralie Fargeat as “a revenge movie somewhere between ‘Kill Bill’ and Lara Croft,” “Revenge” sees a woman going on vacation to a remote desert villa with her married, millionaire boyfriend. Their weekend takes an unexpected — and violent — turn when his hunting friends arrive. But as a new trailer for the genre film shows, the story isn’t about Jen (Matilda Lutz) being preyed upon. It’s about what happens afterwards.

The stylized trailer features very little dialogue, yet it manages to paint a brutal picture of the situation Jen finds herself in. Leered at and cornered, her situation escalates and she’s eventually chased by the men and pushed over a cliff. She survives, and it’s not long until she’s hatching a revenge plan.

“Women always have to put up a fight,” one of her attackers says. But he’s unprepared to handle all of Jen’s fight.

When we asked Fargeat what drew her to “Revenge,” she said, “The urge to make my first feature. The desire to make a real genre film. The need to express my universe as a director, with no compromise. And the will to express my concern about feminism in a very symbolic way,” she explained. The French filmmaker’s other credits include award-winning shorts “The Telegram” and “Reality+.”

“Revenge” made its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The critically acclaimed pic hits theaters and On Demand May 11.
