Trailer Watch: Women Get Their Own Narratives in “Abortion: Stories Women Tell”

“Abortion: Stories Women Tell”

Much like the intense gun-safety debate going on around the country today, abortion remains a hot topic despite the fact that it was legalized decades ago. Women still have difficulty accessing reproductive health, but thankfully the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in favor of abortion rights is having effects nation-wide.

In the new trailer for the HBO documentary “Abortion: Stories Women Tell,” the women affected by the issue are put front and center in a moving story.

As the film’s official synopsis reads, “In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade gave every woman the right to have an abortion. Since 2011, more than half the states in the nation have significantly restricted access to abortions. In 2016, abortion remains one of the most divisive issues in America, especially in Missouri, where only one abortion clinic remains open, patients and their doctors must navigate a 72-hour waiting period, and each year sees more restrictions.”

Award-winning director Tracy Droz Tragos “sheds new light on the contentious issue, with a focus not on the debate, but rather on the women themselves: those struggling with unplanned pregnancies, and the providers who show up at clinics to give medical care, as well as the activists on both sides of the issue, hoping to sway decisions and lives.”

Tragos was one of six filmmakers invited to participate in Sundance’s Women Filmmaking Initiative. She has served on the nominating committee of the IDA Awards and the jury for the Gotham Awards and the Cine Golden Eagle Awards.

“Abortion: Stories Women Tell” will play in select theaters on August 12, 2016 and on HBO in 2017.
