“Transparent” Creator Jill Soloway Talks the Female Gaze at TIFF

Jill Soloway: YouTube

Jill Soloway, one of our favorite artists and creator of hit series “Transparent” and the new comedy “I Love Dick,” hit up the Toronto International Film Festival to give a master class on filmmaking and the female gaze.

“In this keynote address,” TIFF’s official description reads, “Soloway takes on the critical feminist concept of the female gaze and asks what it would take to bring it the forefront of film, art, and culture. By making space for women to take the lead in shaping female protagonism, can we get one step closer to igniting a revolution to overthrow the patriarchy?”

Soloway addresses intersectionality, explains how protagonism is a form of propaganda, and jokes about feminist baseball cards.

As you can see from the video, the audience was packed with industry members, fans, and festival goers eager to hear about Soloway’s experiences and the insight she had to offer on what Hollywood can do to change the game.

If you’re not at TIFF and missed the event, you can watch it in full below.
