We Do It Together Announces First Project with Robin Wright, Catherine Hardwicke, and Freida Pinto

We Do It Together has announced its first feature film, the aptly titled “Together Now.” The non-profit production company launched in February this year with the promise to finance and produce films, docs, TV, and other media working towards the goal of empowering women. “Together Now” certainly lives up to the collective’s mandate — the project is an omnibus of inspiring short films starring prominent actresses and directed by women.

The seven shorts that comprise “Together Now” will be helmed by Golden Globe-winning actress Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), Catherine Hardwicke (“Miss You Already,” “Twilight”), Patricia Riggen (“Miracles From Heaven), Katia Lund (“City of God), Haifaa Al Mansour (“Wadjda”), Malgorzata Szumowska (“Elles”), and music video director Melina Matsoukas (Beyoncé’s “Formation”). The film will be produced by Carol Polakoff, Shelby Stone, and Chiara Tilesi.

So far only two of the seven stars have been announced — Freida Pinto (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Slumdog Millionaire”) and Academy Award-winner Juliette Binoche (“Clouds of Sils Maria,” “The English Patient”). We Do It Together’s Board of Directors includes Jessica Chastain and Queen Latifah, so there’s a good chance that these A-listers will also participate.

While we wholeheartedly support the aims of We Do It Together — and all efforts that put women to work telling their stories — we can’t help but feel that women who have made features should be making more features rather than shorts. While it doesn’t represent a step backward — and the medium of short films deserves far more respect and attention than it currently receives — it’s our belief that the collective has the potential to make the biggest mark in the world of features, and this is the arena that will progress these filmmakers’ careers.

So, we hope that the company’s next project will be a woman-helmed feature-length project rather than a collection of shorts. That being said, we’re absolutely looking forward to the collaborations in “Together Now.”
