Wendi McLendon-Covey Sells Workplace Comedy to ABC

Wendi McLendon-Covey in “The Goldbergs”

“The Goldbergs” star Wendi McLendon-Covey has transformed her humble beginnings into comedy gold. Deadline reports that McLendon-Covey has secured a script commitment plus significant penalty from ABC for a comedy series based on her personal experiences working at “a crappy hotel near Disneyland” as a twenty-something.

Tentatively titled “Hospitality,” the single-camera workplace comedy is inspired by McLendon-Covey’s time spent employed “at the third worst Ramada in Anaheim” and “follows three women as they band together against a terrible new boss in the world of two-star hospitality.”

McLendon-Covey is credited as “Hospitality’s” co-creator and will co-write the pilot. She’s joining forces with “The McCarthys” creator Brian Gallivan on the project. Both will serve as executive producers.

Deadline writes that in addition to ABC, McLendon-Covey has teamed on the project with Sony Pictures TV, the producers behind “The Goldbergs,” and studio-based Happy Madison. Happy Madison’s Doug Robinson and McLendon-Covey’s manager, Gladys Gonzalez, will join McLendon-Covey and Gallivan as EPs on “Hospitality.”

McLendon-Covey’s acting credits include “Hello, My Name is Doris,” “Bridesmaids,” and “Reno 911!” She’s previously said that we’re living in the Golden Age of TV. “With cable and all the alternative platforms raising the bar so high with the quality of shows they’re putting out, and the fact that you can watch almost anything On-Demand now, I feel like it’s a really exciting time to be in the television industry,” McLendon-Covey observed. “Orange is the New Black,” “Broad City,” and “Veep” are among her favorite series.

“The Goldbergs” is currently in its fourth season, and airs Wednesdays on ABC.
