Women Directors at Cannes 2016 #SeeHerNow

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off this week with the unfortunate choice of a Woody Allen film in the opening slot.

As we continuously note, Cannes, like so many other top tier festivals, continues to under-represent women. We wanted to share our annual infographic which highlights the women in Cannes.

This year’s infographic illuminates the dismal numbers for women-directed films at the 2016 festival. In the Un Certain Regard and Director’s Fortnight sections, only 22 percent of the films are directed by women. The number gets even lower in the Main Competition slate, where only 14 percent of films are female-directed. One out of four films screening out of competition are directed by women (Jodie Foster’s “Money Monster”), and zero films in the midnight or special screenings sections are female-directed.

In the infographic below, we’ve listed the women-directed titles in each section. We encourage you to seek them out at Cannes this year, and support the women of the fest.
